Biographies

Marie-Noëlle de Callataÿ, soprano

The Belgian soprano, Marie-Nöelle de Callataÿ, began her singing studies at the age of 15 with Greta De Reyghere.
After 3 years, she entered the Conservatoire de Musique de Bruxelles in Jules Bastin's class, where she obtained the first prize in concert singing and lyric art and the diploma superior of opera singing with the greatest distinction.
She obtained a grant of the Fondation Belge de la Vocation, which allowed her to study in London with Vera Rozsa.

Marie-Nöelle de Callataÿ appeared in the operas Dido and Aeneas by Purcell (Dido and Belinda), Don Giovanni (Zerlina) and Le nozze di Figaro by W.A. Mozart (Suzanna).
She has given many recitals of Lieder and chamber music and has taken part in oratorios in Belgium and abroad (Netherlands, Italy, UK).
In December 1989 she toured in the USSR with Sylvia Traey. She recorded a CD of Peter Philips with the Ensemble Currende.

Marie-Nöelle de Callataÿ is prize-winner finalist of the International Competitions of Singing of 's Hertogenbosch and of the Queen Elizabeth Competition.

Elise Gäbele, soprano

Elise Gäbele studied singing at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels in the class of C. Arnaud and at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel with J. Van Dam and S. Eken. She is a laureate of the Vocation Scholarship of the Verviers International Singing Competition and the Nany Philippart Scholarship. As a member of the Opera Studio of La Monnaie, she has followed numerous master classes and participated in several stage productions.

She sang the Königin der Nacht at La Monnaie, at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and at the Besançon Opera. At La Monnaie, she had previously been heard in Œdipe sur la route, Weisse Rose, Il ritorno d’Ulisse and Pikovaya Dama. At the opera or in concert, she has already performed in Barcelona (Liceu, Wintermärchen), New York (Lincoln Center), Melbourne, Düsseldorf (Altstadt-Herbst Festival), Paris (Cité de la Musique) as well as in all the major Belgian cities. She has also been heard in Zaïde on tour in France and in Khoom on tour in Belgium and France. For several years, Elise has also sung in dance shows with choreographers such as J. Besprosvani, N. Mossoux, P. Bonté and C. Bernardo.

Elise has a particular interest in today's music and collaborates with contemporary music ensembles such as Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles or Ensemble 21. Elise Gäbele has a particular interest in French melody and German lieder as well as in today's music. Two records, one composed of Irène Poldowski's melodies, accompanied on the piano by P. Riga, the other of 18th century opera arias arranged by I. Vitzthumb, have been released under the Musique en Wallonie label and have been critically acclaimed.

Since 2007, Elise Gäbele has been a singing teacher at the Institut Royal Supérieur de Musique et de Pédagogie (IMEP) in Namur.

The Welcome meeting will take place on Tuesday, May 6, at 9:30 am,

Address: Académie de Musique, 49, rue du Château, 1420 Braine-L'Alleud.
The planning of the lessons and the practical aspects will be communicated on that occasion, not before.
The lessons start immediately after.

Scores for the pianists must be sent as pdf at the application AND assembled scores for the pianists must be also sent by regular mail.
The opera workshops "Around Carmen" will take place in order to prepare the final performance organized on Sunday May 11, at 5 pm. Interpretation of the arias, work on the character/stage presence, individual and group classes.

Other vocal  as well as duets, trios are also welcome.
The lessons and concert will take place at the Académie de Musique de Braine l'Alleud, rue du Château 49, 1420 Braine l'Alleud, at walking distance from the train station.

For those who want to add some extra days to their stay, we strongly recommend a visit of the following places:

  • Battle field of Waterloo (on Braine-L'Alleud): 20 minutes walk from the school

  • Brussels Grand Place and old city center: 20 minutes by train (Gare Central)

  • L'Abbaye de Villers-la-Ville: 15 minutes by car

  • Bruges: Medieval town: 1 h 30 by train - 1 hr by car

  • Namur: On the Meuse river, Citadelle: 1 h 30 by train - 45 min by car

Tuition

  • Active Participant : 220 € - listener: 100 €

​​Special reduction on Tuition (not on application fee): 200 € ( instead 220 Euros)
for inhabitants/Academy Braine l'Alleud (student card or proof of address) or participants in the competition 2025.

  • Cancellation before April 20, 2025: refund 25% of the tuition

  • No refunding if cancelling on April 20, 2025 and beyond

TRANSPORT

​The Académie de Musique de Braine-L'Alleud is at a 10 minutes walk from the foundation or from the railway station.

​

  • If arriving by plane:
    Brussels International Airport (based in Zaventem),
    or Brussels South (based in Charleroi)
    are both convenient to arrive in Braine-L'Alleud, as easy train connections exist.
     

  • If arriving by train:
    Braine l'Alleud's station is on the railway connecting Brussels to Charleroi.

    * From Brussels-Gare du midi, Gare Central, Gare de Luxembourg:
    Take the train towards Nivelles/Charleroi: stop at "Braine-L'Alleud"

    * From Charleroi Station:
    Take the train towards Brussels: stop at "Braine-L'Alleud"
     

  • If arriving by car:
    * Coming from Brussels: On Ring Est, exit 25 ("Butte du Lion"/Braine-L'Alleud-Waterloo).
    Then, take direction "Braine-L'Alleud Centre", and follow "Ecole des Arts". The academy is right next door, same building.

    * Coming from Paris: Ring Est (Zaventem, Waterloo, ...), exist 24 - "Braine-L'Alleud Centre"

ACCOMMODATION

  • For a limited number of persons: possibility to stay at the Château du Cheneau in a shared room (3-4 persons), from May 6, afternoon till Monday 12, untill 10 am.

  • Costs: May 6 evening till 11 included: 180 € per person

This housing doesn't include any meal.
Application order will be followed for the attribution of the rooms and is only available for people from abroad.
Payment must be made together with the application, after confirmation of the availability.

Several Airbnb's are present at Braine l'Alleud. Worthy to check too.

  • For those who wish to stay in Brussels (youth hostel - regular hotel)- easy transportation by train - or in Waterloo (car needed), advice can be given by the organization.
